چکیده

We compare the improved measurement of the Lyα forest flux probability distribution at 1.7 < z < 3.2 presented by Kim et al. (2007) to a large set of hydrodynamical simulations of the Lyα forest with different cosmological parameters and thermal histories. The simulations are in good agreement with the observational data if the temperature-density relation for the low density intergalactic medium (IGM), T = T 0 ∆ γ−1 , is either close to isothermal or inverted (γ < 1). Our results suggest that the voids in the IGM may be significantly hotter and the thermal state of the low density IGM may be substantially more complex than is usually assumed at these redshifts. We discuss radiative transfer effects which alter the spectral shape of ionising radiation during the epoch of He II reionisation as a possible physical mechanism for achieving an inverted temperature-density relation at z ≃ 3.

Cosmological and astrophysical constraints from the Lyman-α forest flux probability distribution function

We use the probability distribution function (PDF) of the Lyman-α forest flux at z = 2 − 3, measured from high-resolution UVES/VLT data, and hydrodynamical simulations to obtain constraints on cosmological parameters and the thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ∼ 2 − 3. The observed flux PDF at z = 3 alone results in constraints on cosmological parameters in good agreement with ...

THE EVOLUTION OF OPTICAL DEPTH IN THE Ly FOREST: EVIDENCE AGAINST REIONIZATION AT z 6

We examine the evolution of the IGM Ly optical depth distribution using the transmitted flux probability distribution function (PDF) in a high-resolution sample of 55 QSOs spanning absorption redshifts 1:7 < z < 5:8. The data are compared to two theoretical distributions: a model distribution based on the density distribution of MiraldaEscudé et al. (2000; MHR00) and a lognormal distribution. A...

The matter power spectrum from the Ly α forest : an optical depth estimate

We measure the matter power spectrum from 31 Lyα spectra spanning the redshift range of 1.6-3.6. The optical depth, τ , for Lyα absorption of the intergalactic medium is obtained from the flux using the inversion method of Nusser & Haehnelt (1999). The optical depth is converted to density by using a simple power law relation, τ ∝ (1 + δ) α. The non-linear 1D power spectrum of the gas density i...

The evolution of a pre-heated intergalactic medium

We analyse the evolution of the Intergalactic Medium (IGM) by means of an extended set of large box size hydrodynamical simulations which include pre–heating. We focus on the properties of the z ∼ 2 Lyman-α forest and on the population of clusters and groups of galaxies at z = 0. We investigate the distribution of voids in the Lyman-α flux and the entropy–temperature relation of galaxy groups, ...

Equation of State of the Photoionized Intergalactic Medium

We develop an efficient method to study the effects of reionization history on the temperature-density relation of the intergalactic medium in the low density limit (overdensity δ < ∼ 5). It is applied to the study of photo-reionization models in which the amplitude, spectrum and onset epoch of the ionizing flux, as well as the cosmology, are systematically varied. We find that the mean tempera...
